MOTOR TPL INSURANCE

Motor TPL insurance is part of the everyday life of every vehicle owner as all vehicles registered in Estonia must be insured with motor TPL insurance. Motor TPL insurance, which is regulated by law, indemnifies the loss caused by the driver to others in an accident and also any medical costs of the driver, if necessary.

Motor TPL insurance contract is free and entered into for an unspecified term, but does not automatically provide full insurance coverage. In addition to the regular contract, a policy must be bought for a specified term, which grants the right to use the vehicle, as well as full insurance coverage. The term of the policy may be 1 day to 12 months depending on the wishes of the policyholder.

The owner or user of the vehicle must ensure that the motor TPL insurance contract is valid. The motor TPL insurance contract is always signed in the name of the owner of the vehicle, but can be signed in the name of the owner, by
  • the person marked as a user on the registration certificate of the vehicle
  • the person authorised to use the vehicle on the basis of the authorisation document
  • the person authorised in writing to sign the contract.
Territory of motor third party liability insurance

The motor TPL insurance contract gives you insurance coverage in Estonia and all countries of the European Union and the European Economic Area. As the policy is in Estonian, take an international motor TPL insurance policy or the green card with you when you travel to a foreign country in your car. The green card will be issued to you at any ERGO branch free of charge.

Liiklus+

ERGO MTPL insurance has a big plus: free breakdown recovery service throughout Europe, where your vehicle is towed to the nearest workshop or garage regardless of whether you caused the accident or were the injured party.

ERGO provides a free recovery service for passenger cars and motorcycles in the Liiklus+ package throughout Europe, if these have a valid motor TPL insurance policy by ERGO.

The client can ask for instructions, by calling 655 5401 right after the accident, on how to act at the site of the accident and what to do next. Instructions are given 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. In Latvia and Lithuania, help is also given by calling +372 655 54 01.

Insurance premium

When calculating the insurance premium, ERGO proceeds from the following factors:
  • The type and purpose of the vehicle (motor car, motorcycle, truck, bus, etc.)

  • The main territory where the vehicle is used – the address of the policyholder noted on the vehicle registration certificate or the address of the lessee noted on the registration certificate if the vehicle is used on the basis of a lease contract.

  • The technical properties of the vehicle – engine capacity (kW), maximum authorised weight of trucks and trailers, and the number of seats in buses. The smaller the engine capacity, maximum authorised weight and number of seats in the vehicle, the cheaper the insurance.

  • Make and model of the vehicle. The less frequently the specific vehicle model is involved in accidents, the cheaper the insurance.

  • Risk coefficient arising from behaviour in the traffic being valid for every single vehicle-person pair and remaining between 0,4–3,2. Risk coefficient shows which are the risk level of the responsible user of a specific vehicle on the basis of insurance and loss events history. If a person has several vehicles, then upon calculating the coefficient the insurer considers as basis the coefficients of all the vehicles in use and calculates on this basis the average. Such a calculation or finding the average is more fair from the standpoint of the client, because then in case of new vehicles or vehicles having changed the owner a lower, not the highest possible coefficient is applied. This makes the insurance of new vehicles or vehicles that have changed the owner, cheaper. ERGO uses the determination of risk coefficient on the basis of the responsible user of the vehicle, not on the basis of the driver who drives the vehicle in a specific moment, because during the duration of the policy the insurance company has no overview, who is driving the vehicle in a specific moment.

  • Age of the policyholder. Policyholders of different age have a different risk level while participating in traffic. Statistically more accidents are caused by younger drivers than by elderly ones. For this reason the insurance payment of younger drivers is somewhat higher than of elderly drivers.
Entry into the contract

When entering into a motor TPL insurance contract, you can choose between one of two options.
  • Yes-contract, where ERGO automatically sends you a new policy when the previous one expires.

  • No-contract, where your contract becomes premium-free at the expiry of your policy. You have to keep an eye on the term of your policy to make sure you buy a new one at the right time. The vehicle cannot be used in traffic during the period when your contract is premium-free.
You should keep in mind that when an invoice for motor third party liability insurance is issued, the recipient of the invoice must pay it, as a contract cannot be changed into a yes-contract or no-contract retrospectively. If you do not wish to receive new policies by post, change your contract to a no-contract at the nearest ERGO branch or by e-mail.

If you use the vehicle all year round, a yes-contract is the easiest and cheapest option for you, as it means that ERGO posts or e-mails the new policy to you at the right time. It allows you to save valuable time and money, because policies tied to yes-contracts are cheaper. The policy is also cheaper if you buy it for at least three months or more.

A regular motor TPL insurance contract from ERGO can be entered into at all ERGO branches and by agents (insurance brokers, credit institutions).

Motor third party liability insurance policies can also be bought on the Internet, if you are an Internet bank client of Swedbank or SEB.
